Where It All Began
A Legacy Born from Educators
Our story begins on November 12, 1922, at Butler University in Indianapolis, Indiana. During a challenging era of segregation in America, seven courageous young educators came together with a radical idea: that the best way to uplift their community was through the power of knowledge and collective service.
Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. holds a unique place in history as the only sorority within the Divine Nine (NPHC) founded at a predominantly white institution (PWI). Our founders forged a bond based on scholarship and a deep commitment to community advancement, lighting a torch that has burned brightly for over a century.

New Chapter BeginsCarrying the Torch to Northern Virginia Fast forward to October 4, 2025. On this historic autumn day, the legacy of our founders found a new home in Northern Virginia with the chartering of the Xi Xi Sigma Alumnae Chapter. Born from a desire to expand our service footprint in Loudoun County, Leesburg, Dulles, and the surrounding areas, a dedicated group of Sorors came together to create something special. We saw the need for a space where professional women could not only serve their neighbors but also find a genuine "home base" for their sisterly bond.
Our IdentityWe were built on a dual promise, captured perfectly in our tagline: Rooted in Sisterhood: We cherish the personal connections that support and empower every member to be her authentic self. Driven by Greater: We push boundaries to deliver impactful programs, mentor our youth, and support families right here in our local neighborhoods. We are proud to carry the torch of 1922 into this new era.
